    長音 (च्यो-ओन्) Katakana Long Vowel Ⅰ

    The first rule is that when an English word ends with "-er / -or / -ar / -y" it is written with a long vowel mark.

  • eg:-er driver → ドライバー、user → ユーザー
  • :-or passport → パスポート、donor → ドナー
  • :-ar star → スター、calendar → カレンダー
  • :-y copy → コピー、party → パーティー

  • In addition, when an English word ends with "-re" it is written with a long vowel mark. Particularly, "-ure" and "-tre" almost all require a long vowel mark.

  • eg:-ure culture → カルチャー、cure → キュアー
  • :-tre centre → センター、theatre → シアター

  • 長音 (च्यो-ओन्) Katakana Long Vowel Ⅱ

    The sound rule is that when "oa / ee / oo" in the middle of an English word, it is written with a long vowel mark.

  • eg:-oa boat → ボート、goal → ゴール
  • :-ee beer → ビール、jeep → ジープ
  • :-oo school → スクール、spoon → スプーン
  •   exc. -ood, -ook, -oot,
     good → グッド、book → ブック、foot → フット

    The third rule is that when an English word contains "ea" It is written with a long vowel mark, just like "ee" but, some "ea" words pronounce as "ai / ia / e" and there are exceptions. Therefore, it is necessary to check Katakana spelling for each word. Here are some examples of representative words containing "ea" and some exceptions.

  • eg:-ea tea → ティー、sea → シー、plea → プリー
  •   exc. idea → アイディア、area → エリア
  • :-eat seat → シート、heat → ヒート
  • :-eas east → イースト、season → シーズン
  •   exc. breast → ブレスト、measure → メジャー
  • :-eam cream → クリーム、dream → ドリーム
  • :-eak speak → スピーク、leak → リーク
  • :-eal meal → ミール、seal → シール
  •   exc. health → ヘルス、cereal → シリアル
  • :-ean clean → クリーン、peanut → ピーナッツ
  •   exc. ocean → オーシャン、Asean → アセアン
  • :-each beach → ビーチ、peach → ピーチ
  • :-ear research → リサーチ、earth → アース

    The fourth rule is when English words end with suffixes "-ete / -ote / -ute / -late" It is written with a long vowel mark before "te".

  • eg:-ete delete → デリート、athlete → アスリート
  • :-ote note → ノート、remote → リモート
  • :-ute cute → キュート、flute → フルート
  • :-late chocolate → チョコレート
  •   exc. minute → ミニット
